Pilot Course 2014

Pilot Course  March 9th, 23rd, 30th

Morley College has responded to recent discussions in the media by introducing a short series of workshops for young women conductors led by conductor Alice Farnham. Initially they are working with highly talented 16-19 year olds, who are hoping to pursue a career in music, but may not have considered conducting.

Emphasis will be on the physicality and communication skills required of a conductor, based on the teaching principals of the legendary conducting pedagogue Ilya Musin of the St. Petersburg Conservatoire.  Born in Tsarist's Russia, Musin taught many of the great Russian conductors including Valery Gergiev, Semyon Bychkov, and Yuri Termikanov, but he always taught women too.  Sian Edwards was his first Western student and Alice Farnham was amongst his last students when he died in 1999.

Plans are afoot for a more extensive programme next year with workshops at Morley College, satellite courses around the country and widening the age group up to 25.
